Depression, Anxiety, and Epilepsy…..
How to know if I have Depression or Anxiety? This is such a great question! Many people are stressed over things in their lives yet that does not mean you have depression or anxiety. However, Depression and Anxiety are real issues that need to be addressed with your doctor. As patients, we need to be OPEN and HONEST with the doctors caring for us so they can give us the BEST medical care! Some women or girls living with epilepsy do have Depression and/or Anxiety. These conditions can not only affect our lives but the lives of our family members that are caring for us. You should never feel ashamed or embarrassed to talk with your doctor or family about how you are feeling. Sometimes these feelings maybe caused by a medication, by dealing with being diagnosed with epilepsy or a more serious condition. Regardless of the cause of these feelings and/or being Depressed or Anxious seek out help or advice from your doctor. We need to remember that at times, life can be hard and overwhelming yet we are fortunate to have doctors that are passionate about helping Women and Girls Living with Epilepsy so they can live their lives to the fullest.
These are some signs of Depression:
- Irritability
- Loss of interest or pleasure in hobbies and activities
- Decreased energy
- Difficulty sleeping, early morning awakening, or even oversleeping
- Feeling restless
- Difficulty making decisions or concentrating
- Appetite changes
- Thoughts of death or suicide
These are some signs of Anxiety:
- Not having the ability to stay calm
- Shortness of Breath
- Sleep problems
- Panic, Fear and/or just feelings of uneasiness
- Compulsive Behaviors
- Fear of leaving your home
- Panic attacks
Remember to take some time to honestly look over some of the signs of Depression or Anxiety. Write down your thoughts and feelings about if you have any of these signs so you can discuss this with your doctor. Remember that they are here to HELP you be the BEST woman or girl living with epilepsy! Your doctor wants you to live a happy and healthy life as you navigate this journey of epilepsy. There is NOTHING to be ashamed of if you have any of these feelings but it is IMPORTANT to talk with your doctor so they can work through these feelings with you! Each of you has power in your words, so put your feelings into words and share them with your doctor so they can help you!
